Connect CiteMetrix to Your AI Assistant (MCP Setup)
Connect your CiteMetrix data to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and any MCP-compatible AI assistant in under two minutes.
CiteMetrix’s MCP integration lets you pull your AI visibility data — ModelScore, citations, accuracy alerts, competitive gaps — directly inside Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and any MCP-compatible AI assistant.
Setup takes under two minutes. You’ll need a CiteMetrix account on a Professional, Enterprise, or Agency plan — MCP access is included at no extra cost on those plans.
Step 1: Generate Your API Key
- Log in to your CiteMetrix account at citemetrix.com
- Click your name in the top-right corner, then API Keys
- Scroll to the MCP Server Access section
- Give the key a label (e.g. “Claude Desktop”) and click + Generate New Key
- Copy the key immediately — it is shown once and cannot be retrieved again
Your key starts with cmk_ followed by a unique string. Keep it private — anyone with this key can read your CiteMetrix data. If you lose it, revoke it and generate a new one from the same page.
If you’re on Solo or Starter, the MCP Server Access section shows an upgrade link instead of the key form — MCP access requires Professional, Enterprise, or an Agency plan.
Step 2: Add CiteMetrix to Your AI Assistant
Your server URL is:
https://mcp.citemetrix.com
Claude Desktop
- Open the Claude desktop app
- Go to Settings → Connectors (or MCP Servers)
- Click Add custom connector
- Enter the server URL above
- When prompted for authentication, paste your CiteMetrix API key as a Bearer token
- Claude will confirm the connection and list the 22 available tools
Claude.ai (web)
- Go to claude.ai → Settings → Connectors
- Click Add connector
- Enter the server URL above
- Enter your API key when prompted
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Open ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors
- Select Add connector (or Add MCP server)
- Enter the server URL above
- Paste your API key
- ChatGPT will list the available CiteMetrix tools
MCP support in ChatGPT may require a Plus, Pro, or Team subscription — check OpenAI’s current documentation for the latest requirements.
Gemini (Google)
- Open Gemini → Extensions or Connected Apps
- Select Add MCP server
- Enter the server URL above and your API key
- Gemini will confirm the connection
Copilot (Microsoft)
- Open Copilot → Settings → Plugins / Connectors
- Select Add MCP server
- Enter the server URL above and your API key
Cursor, Windsurf & Other MCP Clients
Most MCP-compatible clients follow the same pattern: open the client’s MCP server settings, add a new remote server with the URL above, and set the authentication header:
Authorization: Bearer cmk_your_api_key_here
For Developers Using MCP Config Files
If your client reads a config file (e.g. claude_desktop_config.json or mcp.json), add:
{
"mcpServers": {
"citemetrix": {
"url": "https://mcp.citemetrix.com",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer cmk_your_api_key_here"
}
}
}
}
Step 3: Verify the Connection
Once connected, try asking your AI assistant:
“What is my ModelScore for [your-domain.com]?”
You should see a response with your current ModelScore, component scores, and trend direction — pulled live from your CiteMetrix account.
What You Can Ask
CiteMetrix exposes 22 data tools across five categories. Here are example questions for each.
Core Metrics
- “What’s my ModelScore for acme.com?”
- “Show me my ModelScore trend over the last 30 days”
- “What’s my citation rate across AI platforms?”
- “How does my share of voice compare to competitors?”
- “Break down my visibility by platform”
Accuracy Monitoring
- “Are any AI platforms saying something wrong about my brand?”
- “Show me my active accuracy alerts”
- “What brand facts is CiteMetrix tracking for me?”
- “Has any AI platform hallucinated information about us?”
Competitive Intelligence
- “Who are my tracked competitors and how are they performing?”
- “Compare my AI visibility to [competitor.com]”
- “Where are competitors being cited but I’m not?”
Query Tracking
- “What queries is CiteMetrix monitoring for my domain?”
- “Show me results for the query ‘best enterprise [category]’”
- “Show me my recent citations with context”
Content Change Detection
- “Have any content changes on my site affected AI citations?”
- “Am I appearing in the top portion of AI answers?”
- “What’s the gap between my branded and non-branded citation rates?”
Managing Your API Key
Revoke and regenerate anytime from your account menu: API Keys → MCP Server Access → Revoke, then generate a new one. Your old key stops working immediately when revoked — update the key in your AI assistant’s settings after generating a new one.
Security
- Your API key is stored as a one-way hash — we cannot retrieve it for you.
- The MCP server is read-only — AI assistants can query your data but cannot modify anything in your account.
- All connections are encrypted via HTTPS.
- Each team member can generate their own API key, scoped to the domains their account can access.
Troubleshooting
“Invalid API key” or “Authentication failed”
Confirm your key starts with cmk_ and that you copied the full key with no trailing spaces. Check that it hasn’t been revoked under API Keys → MCP Server Access, and that your subscription is active on a Professional, Enterprise, or Agency plan.
“Domain not found” or empty results
Use the exact domain as it appears in your CiteMetrix dashboard (e.g. “acme.com”, not “www.acme.com”). If you have multiple domains, specify which one in your question. Confirm the domain has completed at least one scan.
“Rate limit exceeded”
Each API key is limited to 60 requests per minute and 1,000 per day. This comfortably covers normal conversational usage. If you hit the limit, wait for it to reset, or contact us about higher limits for heavy automated use.
Your AI assistant says it doesn’t have access to CiteMetrix
Check that the MCP server is still connected in your assistant’s settings. Some assistants require re-authentication after an update — try removing and re-adding the CiteMetrix connector.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which plans include MCP access?
Professional ($499/mo), Enterprise ($1,499+/mo), and every Agency plan ($299–$4,999/mo).
Can each team member have their own key?
Yes. Each team member generates their own API key from their account menu. Data access respects your account’s domain permissions.
Is there an extra cost for MCP access?
No additional cost — MCP access is included in Professional, Enterprise, and Agency plans.
What data can AI assistants access?
Read-only access to your ModelScore, citation rates, accuracy alerts, competitive data, query results, and content change tracking. AI assistants cannot modify your account or settings.
Do I need to keep CiteMetrix open while using MCP?
No. The MCP server runs independently. Your AI assistant connects directly to it — you don’t need to be logged into CiteMetrix.
Can the MCP server see other customers’ data?
No. Every request is authenticated with an API key tied to your account, and every tool call is scoped to the domains your account owns. There is no cross-account visibility.
